Success Stories

John & Kim

(All names and identifying information in this case study have been changed to protect the confidentiality of this student. However, the story is an accurate description of the services that Communities In Schools – Bay Area provides to students and families.)

John and Kim have been participating with CIS for two years now, they are siblings who have deceased
parents.  John is legally blind, which puts additional stress on the family dynamic due to the extra care
John needs.  Grandma has taken responsibility for her grandchildren and now has legal guardianship.
Grandma has now become legal guardians of two additional great grandchildren.  CIS is providing
guidance and support  to the entire family.

CIS has been contacted by the Smith family regarding assistance with food during the Thanksgiving
break.  Grandma is the head of household and has guardianship of two teenage students, who attend
Bayside Intermediate.  CIS was able to provide boxes of nonperishable food items and personal care
items to the Smith family during the Thanksgiving break. CIS and Clear Lake Regional Medical Center
collaborated together in order to develop a family centered event for the Smith family.

CIS worked extensively with Clear Lake Regional Medical Center to organize a Thanksgiving meal for the
Smith Family and all case managed CIS students and families.  Clear Lake Regional Medical Center
provided a traditional Thanksgiving meal with turkey, dressing, green bean casserole, sweet potato
casserole, macaroni and cheese, assorted pies, dinner rolls, and cranberry sauce.  Clear Lake Regional
Medical Center provided all of the food and Amoco Bank provided the drinks.

CIS was able to not only provide a hot meal for the Smith family and all case managed families in need;
the families were able to take home leftovers.  CIS and Clear Lake Regional were able to mingle with the
Smith family and determine the specific needs of the family.  The Smith family was very appreciative of
all of the leftovers.   This will allow CIS and Clear Lake Regional Medical Center to further assist the
Smith Family for Christmas.
