CIS needs professionals from the community who are interested in teaching students about their careers. CIS will help to create interactive stations that will be conducive to student interest and learning.
Throughout the year Communities In Schools - Bay Area provides clothing to students who can’t afford a wardrobe. Items of clothing can be collected throughout the year. Clothes that are most needed include:
• Boys & Girls Jeans (Size: Children 6 through Adult X-Large),
• Solid Color Polo Shirts (Sizes: Children 6 through Adult X-Large),
• Packaged Boys and Girls Underwear & Socks, and
• Tennis Shoes (Size: Children 10 through Adult Size 11)
During the Holiday season CIS – Bay Area Campus Coordinators match economically disadvantaged families with individual or group sponsors to provide for their tangible needs at Christmas. Christmas can be a very stressful time for these families and this program brings them a little joy. Without the benefit of an adoption, these families would be looking forward to a very grim holiday.
CIS is in need of new or gently used books for our annual Gator Book Swap. Students are allowed to bring books from home and swap for new ones.
One of the many resources CIS-Bay Area offers students is furnishing school supplies. These supplies are always needed at the beginning of the year, but CIS distributes supplies every day to students who cannot afford them. The most needed school supplies are:
• Single subject Spiral Notebooks
• Folders with and without Brads
• Highlighters • Dividers
• 1 and 2-inch Ring Binders
One way that CIS-Bay Area motivates students is by providing incentives for improved attendance, good grades and improved behavior. The incentives do not have to be expensive and might include denomination gift cards from stores and fast food restaurants. Small Denomination Gift Cards ($5 - $10) may include Wal-Mart, Target, Academy, Barnes & Noble, one-time credit cards for iPod music downloads and gift cards for movies, nail salons, meals pizzas and fast-food restaurants.
During the school year students have a week long Spring Break and also needs for snacks throughout the year. While students appreciate not having to go to school during this time, many of the students who are in the Communities In Schools - Bay Area program are provided two of their daily meals while attending school through the free/reduced lunch program. During the break, CIS – Bay Area helps many of these students by providing easy to prepare meals through a Snack Pack Drive. Following is a list of items needed for the snack packs:
- Cheese Crackers
- Rice Crisp Treats
- Fruit Packs
- Dips-Granola Bars
